Humanising Leadership in Risk
by Brian Darlington
I’ve known Mr. Darlington for many years as group head of Safety & Health at Mondi Group. His passion, engagement and wealth of knowledge and experience is a milestone for the excellent safety performance of Mondi Group. He describes a lot of his experience in this book, which focuses on the human side of leadership in risk.
The book has 5 sections that give inspiration and guidance for leadership:
- Need to belong
- Care to lead – lead to care
- Language and Semiotics
- Humanising Incident investigation
- Epilogue and References
What I particularly like in the author’s approach is the importance and feeling given to psychological aspects and people’s needs in the workplace. It is an appeal for humanistic and employee-oriented leadership in occupational safety. In my experience, this kind of leadership is the basis for a commitment to occupational safety across all hierarchical levels in a company. The book offers a lot of ideas and helps to reflect on one's own leadership behaviour.
After more than 35 years of experience as CEO of a consulting company in the field of behaviour-related occupational safety, I highly recommend this book to every manager.
